TRANMERE AND SUTTON TAKE ADVANTAGE OF COVID POSTPONEMENTS

Fan first League Two review from weekend 18th of December featuring - Tranmere and Sutton United

A COVID-hit weekend in League Two saw Sutton United take advantage of a number of postponements to go third temporarily following victory against Harrogate whilst Tranmere won the battle of the play-off chasers to go 5th against a depleted Leyton Orient side.

Sutton United have lost just three times at home this season and they fired themselves up into the automatic promotion spots in a difficult game against Harrogate. Donovan Wilson scored the only goal of the game with a cool finish after Omar Bugiel played him in for his first league goal since October. The goal was enough to win the game for Sutton and Wilson was voted Matt Gray’s sides best performer by fans, picking up a 7.48 rating.

There was a shock result at the Crown Oil Arena where Rochdale produced an excellent display to secure a first win in five matches with a 3-0 victory against high-flying Newport County. Jake Beesley scored a brace and set up Dale’s third to cap off an exceptional performance for the 25-year-old forward, earning himself a well-deserved 7.98 rating from fans. Liam Kelly and Conor Grant were also rewarded for good performances with 6.98 ratings, and Rochdale managed to keep Newport’s star forward Dom Telford quiet on a frustrating afternoon for the Exiles.

Tranmere Rovers were another club to take a big advantage from the weekend’s postponements as they beat Leyton Orient 1-0 at Prenton Park. Orient could only name 4 players on the bench with an injury and COVID-hit squad themselves and Tranmere took full advantage. Former Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing scored the only goal of the game, smashing the ball into the top corner from nearly 20 yards out, enough to give the veteran a 7.48 rating from fans as Tranmere’s best performer on the day. Tranmere have the best defence in the league and proved why as they kept Orient frontmen Aaron Drinan and Harry Smith - two of Orient’s best performers this season - very quiet with little chances to speak of.

Results

Rochdale 3-0 Newport County

Salford City 1-0 Stevenage

Sutton United 1-0 Harrogate Town

Tranmere Rovers 1-0 Leyton Orient
