MORECAMBE BEAT WYCOMBE IN FIVE GOAL THRILLER

League One review from weekend 22nd of January 2022 featuring Morecambe and Wycombe Wanderers

We had no postponements in League One this Saturday as there was a number of shocks with promotion chasing teams stumbling.

Morecambe recently gave Spurs a run for their money in the FA Cup but they had another day to remember beating promotion hopefuls Wycombe 3-2. Adebayo Akinfenwa (7.48) put the favourites ahead before Anthony O’Connor (6.98) replied for the hosts levelling up the game as halftime struck. The man nicknamed ‘The Beast’ then assisted Wycombe’s second goal as they went ahead again. However, there was a comeback for Morecambe, who are in a relegation battle, as two quick fire goals, one by the on fire Cole Stockton (7.48) put them in front. They managed to hold on for a big three points.

There was another five goal thriller as Wigan remained top of the table on goal difference despite having a remarkable four games in hand over joint top Sunderland. However, the Latics got a scare this weekend versus bottom of the league Gillingham. Leam Richardson’s side were cruising going 2-0 up within the first 21 minutes via striker from Will Keane (7.98) and Stephen Humphrys (6.48). But a shock fight back happened as Gillingham pulled the game back to 2-2. However, it ended in heartbreak as Will Keane scored the winner getting his fourteenth goal of the season.

Rotherham are another team hoping to seal a return to the Championship this season and potentially the title, they defeated Cheltenham 1-0. Striker, Michael Smith (8.24), netted the only goal of the game in the first half. They now sit third in the table, one point of top spot and their fans showed their appreciation to the team’s defensive performance as goalkeeper Josh Vickers (7.32) and centre-back Richard Wood (7.32) both were the second highest rated players on the team besides the match winner, Smith.
